I need to cancel a contract I canot use and have never used.

I got a sim card when I was given a new contract. My phone is fixed to EE. I have never used the sim card and would like to cancel the contract. When we spoke to the salesman he said we would only have to pay £5 if the sim card was never used. I haven't actually used the card.
