but before you all tell me about the current troubles....last night my old telephone number from virgin was ported over from my old phone ( i know it has been done because my old phone now has no service) Unfortunately my new phone doesn't either. On my new phone, under settings> network it says SIM not provisioned....what does this mean and is it the problem?

I had exactly the same problem. Phone finally connected to network last night after 2 days without any service, but could only make outgoing calls and texts. Have just rung my phone from landline and its working! So I am fairly sure yours will resolve itself. Eventually. But very frustrating in the meantime.

I finally got the service.....except for 3g (sorry, i should have 'closed' this earlier but i work nights and my brain doesn't function well during the week )
