If you're on refresh you need to pay off the device plan which just leaves the airtime payment running with your current number.

However, if a standard contract you will need to pay entire contract and ask customer services to switch you to SIM only on your current number .

I you pay the device off in full your airtime pla carries on until you want to end it. That means your sim , tariff and number carry on going until you either want to upgrade or end the contractby giving 30 days notice. You will be free to go sim only or swap to payand go if you want to either before the contract end date or after. The airtime will just roll over month on month.
In other words, once the device is paid off, you aren't tied into O and you are flexible to do as you choose.
