How do I keep my old phone number

I'm an existing O2 customer.

I just got a new sim for another phone. I asked to retain  my old number. I saw another number given when I got in store, assistant said to ignore, it would automatically go to existing number. I can only activate with the new number (which I don't want and am reluctant to do - in case).

All helplines have a 45 wait!

Hi @6272

You need to do a sim swap https://swapmysim.o2.co.uk/

Info on keeping your number here https://www.o2.co.uk/help/phones-sims-and-devices/how-to-keep-your-mobile-number

To get to that stage I need to activate. All goes OK until I enter the sim 13 digit number - it then sticks six more digit in front of the 13 and refuses the code.

Since the new sim was inserted (and I was told it was all so easy, quick and my old number would be retained) it has been so frustrating. The helpline said it was sorted twice ... give it 24 hr. Four days later ... nothing!

@6272

If you have an O2 shop close by, I would pop in there and let them sort it. I have done this myself and everything was transferred over within 10 minutes.
