Just keep a close eye on the disconnected account and keep all receipts until you know it's fully cancelled.
I had a little bit of an issue with a similar situation to yourself.... sent the phone back and it didn't get scanned correctly so ended up being threatened with debt letters for the full value of the phone.
Don't get me wrong, o2 were good at eventually clearing up the mess but just thought I'd make you aware
