Galaxy Watch 4 Classic contract

Why is it only 1Gb plan?

Why can't I use Galaxy Watch 4 Classic as a standalone device?
Why does my smartphone needs to be on and connected to the internet if I want to leave it home and make phone-calls with my Galaxy Watch 4 using LTE?
Why am I stuck only with phone-calls and messages, when using LTE?
Why can't I use smartwatch data to stream music, for example, or simply to use Google Maps (it keeps telling me to connect to the phone)?
Why doesn't O2 offer Unlimited Plan for GW4s like they do for Apple Watches?

And gain, why LTE version of Galaxy Watch 4 is basicly useless because it can't work as standalone device.

By the way, my GW4C 46 LTE gets overheated and gets into Flight Mode seconds after I try to make a Phone-call using LTE.

Hi @paolomario.

To answer your questions:

1 - 1 Gb should be enough for a watch that is only sometimes away from the phone as most of the time is works on the phone data.

2 - You can use the watch on it's own, you just need to follow the process outlined below.

3 - It doesn't once you have set it up correctly.

4 - See number 3.

5 - Because the watch is meant to be a supplement to a phone and not a replacement.

6 - Who knows, this is o2 and some of their internal processes and policies make no sense...

This is from another post with someone in a similar situation (hat tip to @MI5) - link to post https://community.o2.co.uk/t5/Android/Galaxy-watch-4/m-p/1480605 )

Follow this process for O2:

Samsung watch setup.
1. Contact O2 and get them to set up Data and WIFI calling on your Samsung mobile, it's free but needs to be set up to use the watch. You can then turn the switch on in setting under connections.
2. If you need an esim the only place to get it now is at an O2 store, it's free at the store.
3. If you already have an esim you won't be able to set up your watch just by going through the process on the Gear app, it'll set up the plan in principle on the phone and watch, but it won't connect to the network so don't waste your time. Delete the plan and go to an O2 store.
4. The only way you'll get the watch connected is by going to the O2 store, sitting with the sales person and have them set up the esim and the plan, it's £5 per month for 1gb which is more than enough data.
5. Most store sales people haven't a clue about setting up the Samsung watch 4g, so have them give you the esim, scan the QR code let your phone set up the plan and then have them go into their system as if your purchasing the watch directly from O2, at the bottom of their screen (this is at an O2 store) there is a box that says set up watch plan, when they press that, it'll allow them to set up a watch data plan, as if you've purchased the watch from O2.
6. At that point and after the salesperson puts in all the info from the esim they gave you into their system, it'll take about 10 min for the watch to connect, you'll then need to go into the connection settings on your watch, turn on auto for data, turn on data roaming and then go to the network search setting on the watch and let it the watch search for the network, it'll then register it and you're almost there.
7. Next go to your mobile and in settings, advanced, turn on the switch to use your mobile data on other devices, make sure when you turn it on, it shows your Samsung watch at the bottom, tap and another screen comes up showing the watch is connected to your phone.
8. Then reboot your watch and your mobile and you're done. Test it by leaving your phone in your home and take a walk, the watch should connect and show the 4g symbol and the mobile calling bars, if you try and make a call and it doesn't work or says connect to Bluetooth, go back to step 7, and reboot the phone to make sure it's found the device, i.e. your watch. It will also say at the bottom of the watch, standalone, means your using the watch on it's own.
9. You're done. Just remember you can only get your Samsung Watch 4g connected by getting it done in the O2 store.

Hi, thank you for the answer.

1 and 5 - it makes pointless to buy LTE version. You buy such version because you don't always want to carry a smatphone with you (if you want to go running, for example), because this smartwatch is able to replace your smartphone sometimes, but O2 doesn't let you. Unlike some other providers offering you plans with more or unlimited data, and letting you use Galaxy Watch 4 LTE as standalone devices.
I have got my Galaxy Watch 4 Classic 46 LTE bought directly from O2 store. With that 1Gb plan. I got it with that esim with QR code so it should be set up and ready to use. And it is, because I can make calls and reply to messages when I'm away from my smartphone. And I've got that 4G icon being displayed on my smartwatch.
But the point is that that's all I can do. And only when the smartphone (I left home for example and went running) is ON and connected to the internet. If I switch my smartphone off I can't make calls through my Galaxy Watch 4 nor receive/answer messages (in this case if I try my smartwatch gets overheated and it gets into Flight Mode)

I can't use smartwatch data to stream music online from Spotify (no matter if my smartphone is on or off if left home for example). In this case 1Gb wouldn't be enough. I can't even use Google Maps, becuse it keeps asking me to connect to the smartphone via bluetooth (and then, after few seconds, sometimes it tells me that it got overheated and gets into Flight Mode). I can't use my smartphone's data plan (I'm with O2 and I have that Unlimited data plan), but, OK, I understand why.
There is also a problem with overheating when GW4 is being used via LTE (many people reports that). I noticed that sometimes, when I'm away from my smartphone and I make a phone-call after 20-30 seconds it disconets and tells me that it got overheated and into Flight Mode.
O2 offers Unlimited data plan with Apple Watches and they can be used as standalone devices (iphones paired with them do not have to be on). I know because some of my friends have got Apple Watches with O2 and they haven't got such problems. It looks like we buy LTE versions but we can only use them as bluetooth versions, and get stuck with some useless contract. we have to pay for.

Like I mentioned before other networks also offer plans for Galaxy Watch4  with unlimited data and people can use them while they have their smartphones off.

Cheers slight_smile

Sounds like you might have a faulty device and/or it is not connect properly (the calls and Google Maps issues).

Have you asked for a swap in a store to see if that helps/fixes things @paolomario ?

I'll also tag someone who knows WAY more about this than me... Any other suggestions @MI5 ?

Sounds faulty to me too.

I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

@gmarkj @MI5
It might be that it's faulty, but I'm affraid a swap will not help much because it might be a very common problem with these watches. I've read lots of comments where people say that they asked for replacements and they behaved the same.

It works absolutely fine on bluetooth, but the problems start when you switch to LTE. I left my phone home (on and connected to the internet) today and went for a walk. The watch was warmer than usually and sucking the battery very quickly. I made a call, which was about two minutes long and it was fine. But I checked Spotify (I was wrong before - you can stream music using watch data). Unfortunatly after 30-40 seconds of playning music the warning appeared on the screen and the watch got overheated (it was really hot) and went into Fligt Mode (all you can do is make emergancy calls. I had to restart it). I checked again Google Maps, and it finds my possition, as before, but it can't find a route to the destination if you ask for it. It keeps asking to connect to the phone.
This video shows what I'm talkin about (overheating)

And this one shows the problems with navigation (and overheating as well)

Have you spoken to Samsung at all @paolomario  ( https://www.samsung.com/uk/support/ )

As they be aware of a fix and it could be as simple as a software update. If not and within 14 days then return the watch... otherwise all o2 will do is replace the watch, as not all Galaxy Watches will be faulty,.

Hi,

My main problem is with O2 - I can't use this Galaxy Watch 4 as a standalone device, and I can't make calls, send messages, or use data to stream music or look for directions in navigation app, when my smartphone is off. For some reason the plan for GW4 is different compering to the plan for Apple Watch (unlimited data, no need to keep smartphone on), or the ones offered by the other providers.
I do not need to contact Samsung. I bougth my GW4 from the O2 store (a month ago), so I will speak to them first if needed. Yes, I hope that it is some kind of issue that can be solved with software update. Sumsung must be familiar with the problem by now because many people report it in comments, forums, etc. I just keep monitoring and will decide later.

Im confused you bought the watch knowing it only came with 1Gb of data included, and that is all o2 offer,  You should be able to stream and use google maps on the phone, but for sending messages and making calls the phone needs to be on and connected somewhere..

Your time has passed now for a return under the change of mind and if its faulty as I said all o2 will do is replace it or send it off for repair.

o2 have set it up so the phone needs to be on and connected to WiFi or Mobile Data, in order for it to work with their network, this is the same as a lot of other global networks.... BT and Voda have set there networks up differently.

The best option is to pay off the phone and watch and cancel the contract and just leave o2, as the network setup isn't going to change any time soon....

Well, if you had a store would you ask your customers to shop somewhere else? I know there're people who get everything given as it is and they don't ask questions, and I understand that. There are wolves and sheeps, as they say. Do you think that explaination like "Who knows, this is o2 and some of their internal processes and policies make no sense" solve the problem? Shouldn't we push on O2 to provide better and fair service for all of their customers? Hence my questions. I wonder why 1Gb plan is enoug for Galaxy Watch 4 owners, while Apple Watch owners are offered Unlimited data plan? I picked this one because I thought it would be the best solutions considering that I also have got my smartphone with them. Can you actually have different plans from different providers for your smartwatch and smartphone? Would it work? Would I be able to pick up/make calls and receive/send messages same way I can do now having both contracts with O2?
