May have to ask a parent to take out the contract if not on the register...

I note that you are a student and that you have lived with your parents for 17 years at that address. Hopefully you are over 18 as that is the minimum age for a contract and as @MI5 points out, you need to be on the electoral register.

Worthwhile pointing out though.

I think if the OP has enough documentation with them, they shouldn't have a problem if they go in store. Although I'm sure it helps, I don't think it's 100% necessary to be on the electoral register. There are non-UK citizens (myself included) who have been able to get mobile phone contracts.

I DO NOT WORK FOR O2

Went Carphone Warehouse today. Took my Passport, bank statement and provisional license. Failed their security test on all networks. I asked if I could just show my documents and was told they don't look at that.

So, along with no contract, my credit score has been reduced from 977 to 960 and I am £4 short.. guessing I lose money for each check or something..

Seems strange and with a credit score over 900 you would normally be ok. Maybe you need to get a parent to take out the account for you and you can use your own bank account details. Not really good for future credit applications though to be honest. You need your own credit history.
