recently received a text saying:

O2: We've noticed your usage has been mostly in our Europe Zone lately. Just so you know our roaming service is intended for short breaks only. If your usage continues like it is, we'll have to add extra charges to your next bill. See o2.co.uk/roamfairuse

i'm unsure as to what my options are. ideally i'd like to continue using my phone (and contract) as it is, however i live in portugal now and not in the UK. i wasn't aware that this would make a difference.

- do i have the option to cancel my contract, and keep the phone, because i don't want to pay the surcharges?

- do i have the option to continue using my phone as it is, and does anyone have any experience of this?

- should i just turn off my 'roaming', sacrifice the 120g that i'm paying for?

i really can't afford to pay the surplus charges at the moment, so i'm a little concerned

You need to contact O2 to explain your situation, although a permanent address abroad is unlikely to get you any slack, a temporary situation might.
All numbers are in this guide Guide: Coronavirus Community Help and Support
When you call, you will be asked for the reason you are calling.
Stay silent for 15 seconds and you will be taken to the keypad options.
Press 2 for Everything Else
Press 5 for More Options
Press 7 for Anything Else which will put you though to someone.
You can also try saying "Upgrade" or "Fraud" to be connected to an advisor.
8.00am is the best time to call if you can.

I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.
Please select the post that helped you best and mark as the solution. This helps other members in resolving their issues faster. Thank you.

Hello,

Ref: RT02C025

Thank you for your texts I am unable to travel back to the UK due to Covid travel restrictions and am in lockdown in Ireland with my parents. Therefore can you please extend my roaming coverage and no extra charge for the time being?

Regards,
Sharon Osborne

@lawrencegoozee You always have the option to cancel your contract and keep your phone. As you're living abroad permanently, this would probably be the best thing to do. You can get a local sim and still stay connected to anyone in the UK with WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger, as long as they have either of those apps too.
