Hi- my new upgrade is coming today and I have requested an ESIM, does this mean I will have a new phone number? Is there a way to keep my old number if not?

eSIM - How to activate  should help - as an upgrade was ordered, your number will remain.  Had you not requested eSIM, your upgrade would have meant simply moving the plastic SIM from the old to the new phone and you're done.

As O2 and eSIMs don't quite gel nicely at the moment from an upgrade perspective, be prepared to go through some loss of service as the eSIM is activated. If you do have to revert to a plastic SIM, you will need to do that ideally in an O2 shop - with photo id in-hand. Good luck, @ellieelliottt.

If O2 do not deactivate your existing SIM, simply move it into the new phone - otherwise swap your number as described here: Guide: Migration & porting into O2

Just to add I agree with what has been said. If you can keep your plastic SIM all the better.

I was without a connection for ten days and it would have been a lot longer if I hadn't  called into an O2 store

This is not O2 and we are all customers here similar to yourself and cannot answer account type queries.
