Early termination

Anonymous
Not applicable

I recently had to leave O2, and I have been billed for early termination charges.

I changed to EE and am actually paying a higher amount than I was with O2 for the same tariff so am now being penalised twice.

I spoke to an adviser and explained everything. The reason for leaving was simply that we moved home and the signal was very poor, most of the time non existent, I was paying for a service I was not able to get. O2 must take some responsibility for this, so how do I get this charge deleted?

I have a transcript from a chat with o2 explaining the problem in detail, they never once mentioned TuGo. I could at least have tried that on my iPhone. Maybe I have a case for a complaint regarding poor Customer service.

Without wanting to sound harsh, the bottom line is you will be wasting your time with a complaint. It is not O2's responsibility to tell you where you can or cannot move to. They have no duty of care in this regard. No network does. It would have been your responsibilty to check the coverage in the area you've moved to, and let's be honest, if you knew beforehand that you couldn't get a signal with O2, would that have prevented you from moving?

They have a Duty of Care to their customers and they should have told me about any alternatives. They failed with this and are now making me pay. That is wrong.

We can't really offer any further useful advice tbh. Fill in the complaint and send it off and see what happens. Let us know how you get on.

Just because someone in Customer Service failed to inform you about TuGo is not grounds to exonerate you from paying the remainder of your contract. You can complain if you wish, and they might throw you a crumb as a goodwill gesture, but you're not going to get much, and will have to pay what you owe. Sorry, but that's the reality of the situation. I'm just trying to save you some time.

My friend,
You WILL have to pay the termination fee.
By not doing so, you are simply urinating into the wind.

@Anonymous

I have moved home several times with work across tmobile, o2 and vodafone.

When you take out a contract you are committing to pay for a fixed minimum period, typically 24 months. Mobile networks have NO moral responsibility. They are businesses. As each of them state in their t&c's they do not guarantee service 100% of the country. It is unusual not to have a 2g service mind unless you are very rural. Did you try 2g only on your device?

Each time I have moved there has been an issue with coverage. Every network above refused to assist. Why? Because it was me that moved the goalpost. Not the network.

So in terms of your early termination charges. You are liable for them. What will happen if you don't pay? Simple. O2 will report the non payment to the Credit Reference Agencies and this will show as a default on your credit rating. This will remain on there for 6 years and will severely restrict your ability to obtain credit, future contracts and all sorts.

You don't agree. Fine. That is your right. But what I have put here is FACT. Why do I know this? Because I have spent hours assisting other members on here who got turned down for mortgages for debts to o2 as little as £12.

I am sorry. This isn't what you want to hear. But it IS what will happen if the charge isn't paid.

Hi, just thought I'd let you all know that O2 have kindly agreed to cancel my early termination charge completley.  It just shows what can be done when you talk to the right people.

Well that certainly is great news @Anonymous  (albeit totally unexpected :smileywink:) I hope you get on well with EE now. Good luck...
