O2 payment advice here including a direct debit mandate if paying from an account in joint names https://www.o2.co.uk/help/account-and-billing/how-to-pay

@Gemma: I think (can’t be 100% sure, but it’s definitely the case with other services I use) that you need to set up your direct debit between paying the last issued bill and the date the next one is issued.

 

If it’s within the period between bill issue and payment, you may not be able to change the details as the process for that bill may have already been set in motion.
