How do I stop roaming charges , is there anything in settings to turn off , thanks

This https://www.o2.co.uk/international/using-your-phone-abroad  has all the options open to you, depending on where you are, and also shows you PAYG as well as Contract (Pay Monthly) cost and bolt-ons needed.

Receiving text messages is the only thing you get for free outside of the EU.

To avoid any charges at all, leave your phone at home.
