Hi I'm on the text and web tariff and I topped up today, £15 so I could get free texts and free internet, and have just gone on the internet on my phone and it has taken over £8 in credit. Any ideas why this has happened?

No not had those messages this time, but have had them before.
It's just annoying because I topped up a few days before I needed too so in theory shouldn't it have just carried on and have no break in services?

No, you get your free allowance once a month on your anniversary date. So you need to wait until then to get your new allowance.

I was told by CS irrespective of the current anniversary date once a qualifying topup is applied *that* date becomes the anniversary date.

Yes, anniversary date is the anniversary of the date you first topped up.
Its the one you have to top up by to get your free allowance or the one on which the cost of your simplicity tariff is deducted.
Its explained in the litte book of instructions you get, on the O2 website and also in the messages O2 send you.
You can also see it by logging into My O2 on the O2 website. By using My O2 on O2 Active or by pending the word Balance to 20202. So its hardly hidden.

so the "anniversary date" is actually a gregorian monthly date by which one must top up in order to stay in the tarrif, not an anniversary date?

(to see what anniversary means, see: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/anniversary)

It bugs me that o2 are using such poorly thought out language - no wonder customers are complaining to the press and the regulator about the PAYG issues

from the usefull o2 support pages from the o2 home page

What is my Anniversary date?
Your anniversary date relates to your tariff and any Bolt Ons you may have. It is the date every month when your tariff allowances restart (depending on your top ups) and it is also the date that any Bolt Ons are renewed (depending on whether you have enough credit for the monthly payment from your call time credit).
If you want to keep the same anniversary date for your tariff, you need to top-up your account with a minimum of £10 each month before your anniversary date. You will receive a text message reminding you to top up. If you top-up after your anniversary date, then your anniversary date will change to the date you topped up.
Similarly for your Bolt Ons. If you have not got enough Calltime credit on your Anniversary date, then when you next top up, the payment for your Bolt On will be taken and your Bolt On will restart on that day. This will become your new Anniversary date.
You can send a SMS with the word "balance" to 20202, or call 4444 free and select option 2,2 to find out your anniversary dates. You will be told your remaining tariff free allowance and/or Bolt On balance (depending on what you have on your account) and the date when these will expire – your anniversay date.
Tariff and Bolt On anniversary dates will be different dates in the month depending on when you set up your tariff or any Bolt Ons you have.
