I have a phone on the "online simplicity 10 12 month" package.  which includes unlimited texts.  I've just noticed that in January I was charged 40p per text while in the USA.  Is this right?  How can I reduce this cost on a future trip?

The charge is correct.

The only way to avoid this if your phone supports TUgo is to send the sms when using wifi http://www.o2.co.uk/apps/tu-go

look here for the costs http://international.o2.co.uk/internationaltariffs/travelling_abroad

Or alternatively.

Unlock your phone to all networks which is free to pay monthly customers and use a local SIM card.

In the usa it is a tough decision as most networks charge to recieve sms as well as send, and international can be high as you will only get the equivelent of a payg tariff so cheaper for calls and sms within the states but may not be the case for calling / texting the uk especialy if the phone can use tugo on a pay monthly simplicity tariff

Some USA Networks don't do this if you pay more for the plan I believe.
