I am a low user and use my PAYG mobile phone (not 'Smartphone' - calls and texts only, no data) only for emergencies and occasional calls/messages.
I understand that if the phone is not used for a specific period of time, the account may be closed and the number lost. Could anyone advise me of how long this period of time is?

Normally if you go a few months over the 6 months O2 will reactivate the sim and restore the credit but you would have to call customer service.

Thank you both. I have, in fact, just recently asked if my number could be re-instated, as it appears to have been removed. Fortunately, the very helpful young lady re-instated it for me almost instantaneously.

Yes, I've just had a message to tell me that I still have £5.57 credit remaining, although initially the display showed £0.00. I was sure I must have had some money on the account, although I wasn't going to complain if it had disappeared. An unexpected bonus. Well done O2.
