Closing contract - leaving UK

Anonymous

Hello,

My contract is until April 2015. I will move abroad in September. Can I just pay my settlement for the phone and cancel the contract? Or do I have to pay a cancellation fee?

Do I get any advantages if I will make a contract with O2 in the other country?

Thanks.

If you're on a Refresh contract you can pay off your device and cancel the remainder of your air time without penalty. Make sure you get your phone unlocked before you do this, so you can use it with a sim from a network wherever you move to.

Taking out a contract with a Telefonica company in another country will be of no advantage to you. You should look for a network that will provide you with the best signal and coverage. That should be your most important concern.

April 2015 means your contract and device should be paid off now so just give 30 days notice to end the airtime.

If you mean April 2016 then follow the advice by @Bambino

Hello,

I'm in a siular situation! I'm moving to Thailand on the 23rd September, so i am going to cancel my contract when i land in thailand (so i can use my phone up until when i fly). I'm on an O2 refresh contract so i have been advised that i can cancel on the day and just pay a settlement fee (whats left on my device plan), and then pay my last airtime installment.

However, does anyone know if i will be able to contact O2 from thailand for free via the telephone?

Also, as i am cancelling my contract my mobile number will not be in use, therefore will that affect apps i have installed on my phone already such as snapchat and whatsapp, or will they continue to work?

Thanks in advance grin

Yes, you can call from Thailand on the free international number, but you can pay off the device plan and give 30 days notice before you travel, so there is no need to wait until you arrive there.
Whatsapp and I think also snapchat are phone number related and once registered to a number are locked to that so if you wanted to use them on a new sim / number, you would need to register again when you got a new phone number.
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.
