Cheapest way to contact UK from Australia

Hi,

I'm due to travel out to Australia later this month for 3 weeks from the UK. I have searched all sorts of options on how to contact the UK from Aus but all seem very expensive. I currently have an Iphone5 on contract with O2. I won't be using the Internet just calls or texts to contact my family. Just wondering the easiest and cheapest solution (Under £60 preferably)? Or if O2 offer any good deals?

The most obvious are free but need all parties to install. Skype for calls or Whatsapp for messages and mms. Use both over wifi.

Another option is to unlock your phone and use a local sim card.
