MMS are not free in almost all tariffs @AndrewGill , so unless you are buying them you will be charged.
Using too many emoji's in text messages will cause them to convert, as will sending to multiple people or email adresses.

You can avoid this in future by sharing as described in Guide: Accidental MMS Sending and How to Avoid it, or by using a file-sharing facility such as Microsoft OneDrive, Google Drive or Dropbox.
I personally always use Microsoft OneDrive as it links nicely to my Microsoft 365 subscription.
