I am being charged for sending pictures to emails. Why is this this?

Sounds like you are sending them via MMS which are chargable.

Rather antiquated technology. Use the likes of WhatsApp if both of you have it on your phones.

This is not O2 and we are all customers here similar to yourself and cannot answer account type queries.
