Charges for data when in France

I sometimes get charged for data when in France which I dont need or use - I am on the simplicity tariff and dont use my phone ( Nokia Asha 300 ) for the internet at all.

How can I avoid these charges ?

As @MI5 says it is the old trick of modifying the apn's that we all used to have to do !

Turn off mobile/cell data in your settings

On that phone you need to completely delete the access point from your phone settings to prevent data use.
I don't remember there being an on/off switch for data?

I was just offering what I know to be on most devices, maybe it's different on Nokias, hard to say as I haven't used them since the 6280 era
