I’ve been looking at dropping to a less expensive tariff (I’m halfway through a 2 year contact). If I look at sim-only deals, they are significantly cheaper than the tariffs I’m offered.

The device is charged separately, so shouldn’t the airtime tariffs be compatible?

@SeanNige

You'd think so, but there's always a difference between a tariff change and an upgrade.

I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

Currently using:

Unfortunately sim only tariffs are not tailored to new contracts. If you buy a new phone you are committed to the tariff for the length of the contract.

Retailers are of the opinion that people will agree to pay more for ther new phone than someone who is free to shop around for a better tariff if they own their phone outright

In essence, two different types of customer market.
