Changed tarrif online but am being sent a new SIM?

Hi all,

I was sent a text recently about being out of my minmimum contract term so i decided to follow the link to upgrade to a cheaper deal with more data. I've been with O2 for years and never changed tarrif but now there are much better deals. I'm on a pay monthly 18 month contract.

Once i got to the end of the process it told me O2 are sending me a new SIM but i just wanted to change tarrif, do i have to have a new SIM?

The new sim will be for 5G. If you have a 5G phone, and are in a 5G area then you can do a sim swap to keep the same number Guide: Sim Swap: a mini guide 2017 update 

However, you can use your old sim in the new phone if you don't want 5G

Ah i see, that makes sense.

I bought my phone separately online from another vendor and am just on a monthly SIM deal from O2 (sorry i forgot to mention that) but my phone is 5G ready so i will want a SIM that supports it. If i have to have a new 5G ready SIM then I'll do the SIM swap.
