I've been attempting for the last few months to cancel my account.

I've paid off the device and no longer use the SIM or number.

Have emailed, faxed, sent letters - just get a brick wall from O2. Took the final step of shutting down the direct debit - now of course they are chasing me for money I supposedly owe them.

Please can someone give me the recipe to stop this. Thanks.

Interesting that the one thing you haven't tried is calling them. It's the best way and the account will be cancelled immediately. Unfortunately they may well ask you for 30 days notice unless you have proof of the other attempts to cancel.

30 days notice is no longer required if following the new process @jonsie
