Cancelling contract

I have upgraded and rang a month ago to get a contract cancelled anf the number cancelled and was told it was down! I was recently on my old phone where my old messages are and I am still getting messages to say I have to pay my bill, which I already paid off and I'm not paying anything more! What do I do???
