I have a Samsung Galaxy J3 and I can only speak with anyone if I have it on loudspeaker.

 

I can receive calls - the phone rings - but when I pick up I hear nothing.  It has to be on loudspeaker.  Can anyone suggest what I can do to correct this - it suddenly happened in the middle of a conversation.

Sounds like your earpiece speaker has failed.
Sometimes just rebooting the phone might fix it but if not, speak to Samsung for repair.

make sure there is no fluff or lint stuck in the earpiece too.
