Why am I charged for calls and texts to Ireland?

Because Ireland isn't part of the UK. It's considered a text abroad.

It's the same as the Channel islands. O2 started charging to Eire and those islands maybe 12 months ago. The other networks charge too as far as I know.

Eire or The Republic of Ireland is not part of the UK.

It's an EU country, so EU International charges apply.
