So I got a message saying my handset has been paid for and I got a new airtime bill yet I’m still getting charged for the Apple handset - can’t get through to anyone and the automated message will not take me further than to pay my bill which is wrong.

This looks like something you’d need to call O2’s customer service team about – give them a call on 202, 0344 809 0202, or specific payment management number 0800 902 0217 / 0800 032 5302

Use the specific Payment management number 0800 902 0217
The opening times are:
Monday to Friday – 8am to 8pm
Saturday – 8am to 6pm
Sunday – 9am to 6pm
