Being charged for data while on wireless?

Anonymous
Not applicable

I have had a PAYG SIM for a long time, in an old Nokia phone. I also had a Palm Pre with a Pay Monthly SIM. I have just changed the Palm to be PAYG and that all went brilliantly. However, because of the better battery life on the Nokia, I have put the Palm SIM into that, and the Nokia SIM into the Palm.

However, I have just received a 'Network Message' on the Palm saying that I have used £1 of data today. I have not gone onto the net, and the phone is connected to my home wireless, so how can I be being charged for data? I am getting my email onto it, but would expect that to be via my wireless. Any ideas anyone?

The advice you received from jonsie is correct so don't dismiss it. Look in your settings to turn off mobile or cell data and nothing will connect on anything other than wifi.

Probably apps updating in the background when wireless goes to sleep or you're out of wifi range. You need to switch off mobile data to stop these charges.

Hmm, not sure this is the answer as, since moving the SIMs (which I only did today) I have been sitting less than 6 feet from the wireless router, which has not gone to sleep at all. As I said, my mail is being downloaded, but would expect that to go over wireless.....and wouldn't any other background things do that too? Does anyone have any other suggestions please? I assume it is possible to turn off mobile data but keep wireless?
