Does anyone know if I can transfer the balance from one phone to another as I`ve just bought a new mobile

Balance is on your sim card, not the phone so just use your old sim.
You can swap it for the correct size in an o2 shop if needed.

The O2 store will transfer your number, tariff and balance onto a new sim at no cost.
