Incidentally, does anyone know of an alarm app that works on Android with the phone switched off?

Currently you would have to root the phone and use an app to turn the phone on just prior to the alarm time. Android does not have a "BIOS" so it's not possible to encode an alarm which turns phone on automatically. I have read about some new types of processor that Samsung are working on which would allow this kind of function but they are not yet in production.
