I am pay monthly for my phone and have just bought a tablet that can take a sim. Can I get an additional sim linked to my account and 'share' the data usage between phone & tablet?

No sorry.
You need an additional data only sim for a tablet.

Although you can't have two SIM cards operating on the same number, there is nothing stopping you creating a WiFi Hotspot on your phone and connecting the tablet to that.
