Im looking to add another phone for my child for xmas do i start paying it once i get it or when it starts being used

As soon as you get it if it's a contract phone.
If PAYG don't top up until Christmas.

 In that case your only options are payandgo or buy nearer the time. For that and to be sure of stock you will be better off going instore.
