You may want to try a new sim card or try calls from a different location.
If phone is faulty, contact Samsung for a repair or if less than 28 days old, return to O2 for replacement.

You didn't move your face away from the proximity sensor (which reactivates the touch screen) and inadvertently touch mute with your cheek did you?
You'll have to decide for yourself if yours truly has done this when he's been getting used to a larger phone
