How come if i go to a 3rd party instead of going to O2 direct I can get an iphone 5s for £99 and a monthy contract for £27 (Unlimited text and calls, 1G of internet)

If i went direct to O2 to get a contract of £27 i would have to pay £449.99?

3rd parties can offer discounts because they get referral fees from the networks.
It's the same no matter what phone, 3rd party or network provider.....

Refresh is a con.  you buy the phone for the full price and take out a contract for two years.

It can cost more for the handset yes.

But not everyone wants to be locked into the same handset over so many years or have the disposable income to shell out £600+ on a phone !

How can it be a con?

You get 2 years interest free credit and can pay it off and upgrade at any time.

I don't think you have looked at it properly, plus it's not compulsory, you can shop wherever you like.
