Hello I have two devices with o2, a tablet and a phone.

Whenever I use 5g it seems I can't get any faster than 4g. Which makes me feel like I'm paying for a service I'm not receiving.

Right now I am in Brighton (UK) - and there is a 5G network here.

on google's speed test, my result are as follows:

Tablet:

6.38 Mbps download

6.66 Mbps upload

Latency: 2 ms
Server: London

Your Internet connection is slow.

Mobile:

6.24 Mbps download

4.46 Mbps upload

Latency: 2 ms
Server: London

Your Internet connection is slow.

Both devices are new tablet is Galaxy Tab S7+ , Phone is Motorola Moto Edge 20 Pro

Both have their own sims, with their own data contracts.

Tablet has a mobile broadband sim, phone has a phone sim with data.

Can you tell me why this is? What's the point of 5g is it's slower than 4g?

@Elextric

You're not paying extra for 5g and speeds will vary depending on conditions and the number of users on each mast.

However, as you have posted in PAYG, 5g is not available to you anyway.

I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

Edited to add :

5G is not available on Pay as You Go at all in the UK on o2's PAYG offerings so you will only get 4G speeds.

If you want 5G you need to move to another provider.

-------

You dont actually pay for 5G you pay for a network connection, whether that be GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA, 4G or 5G

Also a lot of factors affect mobile data speed, congestion on the network, mast issues, speed of the backhaul back to the POP.

Have you checked https://status.o2.co.uk for local mast issues.

Oh I posted I  the wrong place I'm on contracts for both, and brought both devices from o2 as they were 5g and the sims were 5g.

It's bad enough hardly to find anywhere in the country that has got 5g that you visit. Then when you do it's just as slow as 4g, so it might as well not even be there. I brought my contract and phone / tablet on the basis they were 5g and o2 say they have 5g,and when I connected I imagined I would get speeds at least towards the lower end of what 5g is heralded as being able to deliver. Instead I get 4g speeds or worse with the added frustration of knowing I bought 100gb and 250gb monthly data sims which are effectively useless to me.

On the checker thanks madasaf1sh , it says there are many users it might get slow. So I guess o2 have no idea how many people ping off their towers here before they implement 5g?

Very poor and yes I feel like I've been duped.
