5g SIM in a 4g phone?

This is probably a bit obvious, but, I was looking to get a new contract on the Unlimited data tariff but it states 'in the description' that I would need a 5g phone. Is this accurate? Would a 5g SIM not be backward compatible with a 4g phone? Obviously, I am not expecting it to run at 5g (there is no coverage in Edinburgh anyway!) but I would be looking to upgrade my phone in 2022 when the new rollable 5g phones come out.

I went throught the purchase options and told O2 that I didn't have a 5g phone and it didn't complain.

Thanks in advance.
