2G option hidden

Hello - I have a Nokia 7.1 SIM free handset.

I get no 3G or 4G signal in my home, the coverage checker does say both should be great indoors, but unfortunately not a peep of a signal unless I walk out onto the road, then full signal.

If I put my sim in my old phone, a Nokia 6.1, I do get a full 2G signal in my home and everything is dandy.

Now, if I put a PAYG Vodafone SIM in my Nokia 7.1 I get the option to use 2G with full signal as the preferred network and 3 & 4G again getting very little signal.

If I put my o2 SIM in the 2G option disappears with only 3G & 4G available. Anybody know why the 2G option is being hidden by my o2 SIM?

I would use WiFi calling but that disabled by the o2 SIM as well.

The only network where I get a good 3 \ 4G signal is Three, but I don't want to change Networks as o2 offers the best coverage as soon as I leave my house!

I wonder why you want 2G. This will be phased out once 5G goes nationwide.

Just carry on using 3G. Its faster anyway.

I would love to be using 3G or 4G but as I stated, in my home I do not get a 3 or 4G signal.

The only o2 Signal is 2G, but the Nokia 7.1 hides 2G as an option.

The 7.1 does support 2G, not sure why it is not showing up as a menu option... And you clearly have 2G signal in your house, as your test shows...

Wondering if you select 2g/3g auto instead of 3g/4g auto, will it pick up 2g after a restart, as it is the stronger signal in your house?

@mesittinghere Have you tried adjusting which Sim slot you use to see if it makes a difference?

The handset only has one SIM slot. If  I put a Three SIM in the slot, these are the options I get

The options with the o2 SIM Card in the same slot

Which leads me to believe that, unfortunately, O2 have decided not to provision 2G in your area any more (whereas the 3 network does).

Only way to test this is to see if your O2 SIM shows 2G in another area (hard to do in these restricted times).

Can't think of any other reason for what you are seeing, @mesittinghere.

On the O2 Network Coverage section of the O2 website, you can say you are having issues in your area, in the event that there is a problem with your nearest O2 mast (say the 2G transmitter is unintentionally down, the website and O2 Network Checker app do let you specify what band or aspect of service is giving poor reception/performance) - worth a shot.

Which is odd as my Sim is working on 2G in my Nokia 6.1. It's the only way I can make and receive calls!

It has to be your phones firmware that's not programmed to give 2g on O2 network.
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

Exactly what I was thinking, @MI5.

I wonder if it's bypassable?
