I am on an unlimited calls and texts + 1GB package on iPhone 5 and I am going for 15 days on holidays in Italy. What's the best and cheapest option to have my 3G on all the time? Thanks very much

Hi,

Hope you enjoy your holiday.

Usual advice is to turn off 3G and mobile data when your abroad, and use wifi where you can.

Also turn off your Voicemail by dialling 1760 before you go.

You could look at purchasing a local sim while your there and use that.

If your phone is not unlocked to all Networks then request the unlock here :

None of your allowance is for use overseas so as BOB says, cheapest option would be a local simcard. Keeping 3G enabled all the time would result in an horrendous bill so wifi is the way to go.

When travelling abroad you really need to change your online habits and normal phone usage, you are after all (hopefully) on holiday. Enjoy it!:smileyhappy:

O2 Travel gives you a daily limit of 15 MB per day for £1.99 in Europe. If you are going to use a lot less than this per day it might be worthwhile considering opting out of O2 Travel and paying the £0.46 per MB and O2 will automatically cap your data usage to £40. Either way the caps will prevent you running up an astronomical bill whilst in Italy.

I took my BlackBerry to China recently where charges are a lot higher and used it for email, BBM and occasionally surfing the web e.g. Google maps etc. My data bill came in at around £33. Having said that, BlackBerry OS devices (not BB10) use data compression which reduces the amount of data you use significantly. The iPhone doesn't have this advantage so you need to bear that in mind.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions - much appreciated. In particular the disabling voicemail one slight_smile

Just a shame there isn't a special partnership with a local mobile operator. I would have been happy to pay 20-30 pounds but without the 15MB limit slight_smile

I am just using another phone with a local SIM card and using my iPhone just when wireless is available.

Thanks everyone slight_smile
