I received a text stating 0800 numbers are now free but then I was given a link which meant to get this and more I had to pay monthly
Are they free or not?
If free do I have to do anything or can I just phone and it's free

Hi @Anonymous

O2 provided an official help link re these numbers

http://www.o2.co.uk/help/everything-else/service-numbers

The community manager @Toby was asked for clarification and he posted this on the 1st July

From 1st July 2015, 0800 numbers are free to call from your mobile. As indicated on our special numbers page here the access charge applies to numbers beginning 084, 087, 09 & 118, but we can confirm this access charge does not apply to 0800 numbers.

Only 0800 and 0808 numbers.
All others of this type carry an access charge of 25p per min.
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

Very soon to rise to a ridiculous 45p.

Does O2 have a package for calling 0845/0870 etc. numbers?  When I was with Vodafone I paid about £3 a month and got 300 minutes that could be used for those numbers.

It has been suggested but I think o2 must be making healthy profits from these numbers. With the recently introduced connection charge I doubt a package will be available anytime soon.

Use  http://www.saynoto0870.com for an alternate number or make use of the overseas number on the companies  websites.
