Had a call from this number claiming to be o2 went down n with his sale of a new tablet on contract with o2 which I was all up for doing. He then couldn’t change my flat number on the system and asked if that was a big issue for me? I went along with it and said no then he asked me to put my card details into the phone as this would confirm I was the account holder. Needless to say the call was politely terminated and number blocked. Shame really as the tablet deal he was offering sounded really good lol

Unfortunately this is all too common.

Even though as you say only O2 has your number for marketing believe me there are many organisations that have your number and this is how and why.

When you complete a form online and enter your phone number, which many do in all innocence, as many sites won't process orders, registrations etc without it the company concerned will then sell your information including your telephone number!.

Not this number they don't, I've never filled in a form with it, not have I entered my tariff information in such a form ever.

It is only marketing organisations or organisations that want to sell you PPI reclaim, injury compensation, or a micky tablet etc that buy this information.

No, they were pretending to be o2 and sell me a tablet contract. They had my current tarrif info, and time remaining on contract.

The simple way around this is do not give your number to anyone outside of your family and freinds or trusted circles.

My family don't have this number.

If you are asked for your number in an online form and you have to give it to continue simply enter the first 5 digits of the code EG 07806 etc and then 6 zeros. The form is looking for a string length not specific digits. This way no one gets your number unless YOU want them to have it.

Err yup

I have been doing this for a number of years and never get any marketing calls on my mobile.

Nor me... Until o2 flipped a switch last year and reset everyone's marketing preferences

And let's not forget the many trusted partners. They have automatic access to O2's customer base so even ticking the relevant boxes in preferences will not stop your number being sold or given to the trusted companies own subsidiaries and any Tom, Dick or Harry willing to pay good money for such sought after private information.
