Payg purchase of phone and using giff gaff sim

Hi I'm looking at purchasing a phone from O2 I have a couple of questions before I make my mind up

• is the up front cost of phone a one off payment and then the phone is yours.       

• can you use a giff gaff simcard in the phone as it runs on O2 network.

•will the phone be cut off if you don't top up a O2 simcard in 6months , as I read the phone can be disconnected

3. If using an O2 sim you need to make a chargeable call or text once in any 6 month period

You only need top up every 999 days as long as you make chargeable use every 6 months
