Can I ask - is there a difference between an O2 Phone PAYG SIM and a Tablet/Mobile Broadband SIM?

Picked up a PAYG SIM in store with the intention of giving the mobile data coverage a test-drive before deciding where to move to O2 but it won't work in an unlocked 4G mobile router despite getting a full signal.

Hi @chrismscotland

In the shop they are sold as completely different sims for each device

Tablet/Mobile Broadband

https://www.o2.co.uk/shop/sim-cards/sim-only-deals#deviceType=tablet&contractLength=P12M

PAYG Sim

https://www.o2.co.uk/shop/sim-cards/pay-as-you-go#simtype=classicpayasyougo

Hope that helps and welcome to the forum Welcome

@chrismscotland you'll need to enter the APN settings into the router.

Try those listed here https://community.o2.co.uk/t5/Android-Devices-Samsung-HTC-Sony/Connecting-Android-Phone-to-Data-Serv...

I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

Currently using:
Pixel 7a (O2 & Lyca), One Plus 6 (Sfr), iPhone 12 Pro Max (Vodafone)

The main difference @chrismscotland is that a normal PAYG sim will include (or be able to use) calls and texts.
A Mobile sim is data only.
If the router is not working, then try the suggestion of @MI5 above and get the correct settings in it...
