Nokia 3210 (2024) drops to 2G during calls — VoLTE confusion

Hi all,

I’ve got a Nokia 3210 (2024), bought new from the O2 shop in Torquay this February. Recently I’ve noticed that when I make a call, it takes a while to dial, then switches to 2G. As soon as the call ends, it jumps back to 4G.

I ran the compatibility check here: https://www.o2.co.uk/help/international-and-network/network-and-coverage/3g-switch-off

Everything checks out (IMEI and model number), but when I select the phone make, it says “Not compatible” — even though HMD (who makes the phone) confirmed to me that it’s VoLTE compatible.

I’m pretty much at a loss. The phone is new, and I’ve already contacted HMD who insist it supports VoLTE. Is this an O2 provisioning issue? Has anyone else had this problem with newer Nokia models?

Thanks in advance!

VoLTE (4G Calling) is not presently enabled on all PAYG.

O2 say this will be rolling out by the end of this year.

The same goes for WiFi Calling

This is not O2 and we are all customers here similar to yourself and cannot answer account type queries.

From the guide you followed

4G & WiFi calling will be available for Pay As You Go customers by the end of 2025. To access it before then, you'll need to switch to Pay Monthly.

@RoboGramps

From the link you posted above:

I'm on Pay As You Go. What do I need to do?

If you're on Pay As You Go, and your phone or SIM doesn’t support 4G Calling (VoLTE), you may lose the ability to make and receive calls once 3G is switched off in your area - even if you still have signal for texts and data.

To stay connected after the 3G switch off:

  • Make sure you're using a 4G or 5G compatible phone

  • Check that 4G Calling is enabled in your phone settings

  • Some older SIMs may need replacing to support these features. Please contact your local O2 store for support

4G & WiFi calling will be available for Pay As You Go customers by the end of 2025. To access it before then, you'll need to switch to Pay Monthly.

I have had an Email back from HMD that the Nokia 3210 (2024) is Volte Compatible.  My Sim is new, as I had it when I bought the Phone back in February this year.  I guess I just have to wait until O2 do the 4G for PAYG.

The only option I have for connectivity concerning the 4G is,   the option 4G, 3G and 2G. all in the same option, as well a 3G and 2G and 2G on it's own.  4G,3G,2G is selected and the phone is updated,

@RoboGramps Your phone should be fine once O2 turn on 4G Calling (VoLTE)

Unfortunately O2 have been tardy in giving 4G Calling to their PAYG customers.

As your phone is dropping to 2G it seems you are in an area where 3G is turned off or it would use that instead

The phone is doing what it is supposed to do and giving you the facility to make a call while 4G Calling is not available.

Patience I'm afraid

Your phone setting is fine @RoboGramps and yes, it's a case of just waiting it out for O2 to get to your turn.

Thank you all, for the responses. I would like to put all of your responses as "Accept as Solution" But I don't think I can.  So,  Kudos (Wow, Kudos,  Project Gotham Racing). To all responses.
