Getting texts about 3G switch-off on a 4G phone

Hello,

My Mum has a Doro 6820 mobile phone which is 4G but keeps getting texts from O2 telling her that 3G is being switched off later this year and that she needs to upgrade!

I also have the same phone model on Tesco Mobile and when calling it's Info Hotline it 'thinks I have a 4G phone' and won't need to upgrade.

So, come on O2 you can do better than this! Why is my mother receiving these texts telling her her phone needs to be upgraded after the 3G switch off when it is a brand new 4G phone!

Why is she getting these texts?

We can't give a definite answer as to why but it does seem O2's records are a bit skew wiff.

Better they play on the safe side than leave some customers in the lurch.

Just ignore them if you know the handset is OK.

This is not O2 and we are all customers here similar to yourself and cannot answer account type queries.

Thanks @Enlli for your quick response.

It's definitely 4G and has 4G even ticked in Settings so let's hope it's an O2 mistake.

Thanks again @Enlli 😀

But, as you are aware from all the other times you've asked, 4g calling isn't available on PAYG, so you're limited to 2g for calls which is expected to be turned off by the end of 2026.

@MI5 Bit confused by your reply @MI5 4G is available on PAYG phones and will continue to be after the switch off. Are you confusing things with Wi-Fi Calling? My post was about texts from O2 telling my Mum she has to change phones due to the 3G switch-off when she obviously has a PAYG 4G phone.

See attached Google search answer. 😀

@koala321

No, it's not me who is confused.

Calls go over 4g too and is an integral part of wifi and 4g calling, which isn't available on PAYG from O2.

My post above is correct, in that, unless O2 change something (many thoughts and rumours about this) you will NOT be able to make calls when 2g and 3g are switched off.

@MI5 4G Calling is available on PAYG. Unless you know something we don't, there has been no announcement that we won't be able to make 4G calls on  a PAYG phone after the switch-off.   I'm not sure about WiFi calling. In any case, even if PAYG is switched off for 4G, the Doro 6820 is a 4G phone, and unless they stop making the SIM cards or something, should continue to work after the 3G/2G switch-off without having to buy another model, despite what the O2 text said.

Like @Enlli says, I think O2's guesswork when deciding whether your phone is a 4G model or not is a bit 'off song'! 😅

As stated you only need 4G for data.

Calls on PAYG are stuck in 2003 mode. And if O2 don't do anything it's back to the 1990's

This is not O2 and we are all customers here similar to yourself and cannot answer account type queries.

@Enlli Why are the members of here so anti-PAYG. I hope PAYG never goes away. There is nothing wrong with PAYG and I hope it lasts for many years. Why wish the worse for it?
