My mum has just started texting, and is currently being charged 30p per text!
It is being sent at a text and the recipient phone is stating it is a text, presumably not a mms, under "details".
Iirc she is on the normal classic PAYG tarrif and even gets the bonus x number of texts & data if you top up by £10/15 that month.
When I checked online for the tariff name it all looked correct.

I just can't work out for the life of me why she is being charged so much when it is supposed to be pennies?
Any thoughts on what I can do?

@ColdEagleShe should only be charged 2p per text. I suggest you call customer services on 4445 and ask why she is being charged this amount

A link to MMS although I doubt that it as they are now 55p to send https://community.o2.co.uk/t5/How-to-Guides/Accidental-MMS-Sending-and-How-to-Avoid-it/ba-p/1014132

What tariff is it exactly?
The Classic 321 tariff doesn't give any bonus texts so is this an old legacy tariff?
If you look in the MyO2 you will see standard pricing for sending texts, calls etc when no allowances are available so her tariff could be a 30p to text tariff?
I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

Some PAYG Bolt-ons let you TXT other O2 numbers for free yet charge for cross-network TXTs. It is a minefield on PAYG.
