Calling 123 from an O2 phone I assumed would be free because it's a service provided by O2 for O2 customers, especially as my PAYG tariff has unlimited minutes. My remaining balance has gone down however, and I can't find my chargeable usage, but presume I've been charged for calling 123. Please confirm.

Did they change the voice to a man's?

I seem to remember hearing something about it on the news?

Looks as if it's female since 2007?

The original British Speaking Clock, introduced in 1936, initially used a female voice. However, the service has had both male and female voices over the years. The first voice was Ethel Jane Cain, a telephonist, followed by Pat Simmons. Later, in 1985, Brian Cobby, a former Shakespearean actor, became the third voice.

More recently, Sara Mendes da Costa has been the voice since 2007.
