I use my various mobiles (all on o2) to receive and send emails using my xxxxx@xxxxx.freeserve.co.uk email address (now Orange of course). Until today I have set up my outgoing smtp email server as smtp.o2.co.uk and used my xxxxx@o2.co.uk email address and password as verification. Given that after November 1st my o2 email address will no longer work, how can I set up my freeserve/orange email to work from my o2 phone?

It's ok, I solved it myself. No longer using the o2 smtp server and email is working fine.

Best bet would be to speak to someone at Orange, I think.
I found this link, but it's very old. Not sure if it would still apply:

You can't use an orange smtp server unless you are connected to orange broadband. That is why on my o2 mobile I currently use the o2.co.uk smtp server to send.

Free accounts from Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo can all be set up to send from third party email addresses.

Which email client are you using and which phone do you have? Are you using the stock phone app to configure your email?
