If your device has connected to O2 Wifi Extra you will notice the wifi signal on your phones screen. Just like you would expect if connected to wifi at home.

Also, in your settings you will notice that your device is connected to the ‘Wifi Extra’ network.

I regularly use O2 WiFi as I'm in Costa most days. I still get a landing page confirming that I'm using Costa's hotspot, but I'm never asked for any login details. I then have to press a "continue" button, in order to access the website that I was looking for. Is that how it's supposed to work?

If you're connected to O2 Wi-Fi Extra (which is secure) you should see that on the screen , most of these hotspots used without a log in are insecure, so treat them accordingly.

That makes sense. I understand about the lack of security with hotspots that don't require a login, but O2 WiFi seems to recognise my phone (or the number associated with it), because it always welcomes me using my name. So perhaps it's bypassing the login step? (i.e remembering my login details).

Either way, it doesn't look like I've been using O2 WiFi Extra. But thanks for the link, I'll try and read up on it.

Well I'm still none the wiser. This link explains that O2 customers are registered by default, by virtue of the fact that they're using an O2 sim. But my iPhone (which is listed as one of the compatible devices) only connects to the regular O2 WiFi network, which of course is freely available to anyone, regardless of the network they're on. Is it perhaps the case that not all of O2's WiFi hotspots offer the WiFi Extra service?

Perhaps @Toby or @MarinaP could shed some light on this?

Edit: is there something wrong with the @ mentions?

Correct, it was only announced last month, and I've just found this:

Who can use O2 Wifi Extra?

O2 customers only, who have received a communication from O2 advising them that O2 Wifi Extra is now activated on their device.
