Sometimes the 'No Service' sign comes up if the phone has been imei locked by the network its on.

You can check here http://www.checkmend.com/uk/

As said iPhones purchased sim free full retail price don't lock out.

However if the iPhone was taken out with a contract at the Apple Store then I'm told it can lockout to the first sim inserted.

I've not come across any market traders who have the software to force unlock an iPhone - I think due to the a chips inside them - so the best option would be the original network as indicated.

Also it's worth trying hooking up the iPhone to iTunes to see if that helps and check no carrier updates are pending.

You could try putting another sim card in it.

If you purchased directly from Apple it will be unlocked.

If purchased from anywhere but apple, it will be at best, locked to the first networks sim that is inserted.
If second hand, you can enter your imei into this site for information

What network did your daughter use?

It's possible that the new sim requires activation first?

I have no affiliation whatsoever with O2 or any subsidiary companies. Comments posted are entirely of my own opinion. This is not Customer Service so we are unable to help with account specific issues.

Currently using:
Pixel 7a (O2 & Lyca), One Plus 6 (Sfr), iPhone 12 Pro Max (Vodafone)

Yes it sounds like the handset is locked. It can be unlocked through the network directly or via a 3rd party.

If your daughter was already on O2 there's no need to unlock the phone if you're also an O2 customer, although it's always a good idea to have it unlocked if you ever wanted to change networks or sell the phone. You say you've put a new sim in the phone this morning. Did you swap your number and account to the new sim? If you haven't done so yet, you can use this link: http://swapmysim.o2.co.uk/ The swap can take up to 24 hours, but it's usually much quicker than that. Once the swap is done you'll need to keep turning the phone off and on every hour or so until the new sim activates.

I DO NOT WORK FOR O2
