I received an email from “O2wifi@o2.com” asking me to click a link to verify my email address. I haven’t clicked it-is it likely to be a scam ? Flagging it here to warn others if it is.

I think it's a scam, simply because anything ending with O2.com  doesn't exist. It's O2.co.uk.

Block the number and report it free to 7726.

DO NOT follow any links or enter any information.

o2.com is the global o2 domain and does indeed belong to Telefonica, the domain points to the o2 Name Servers.

Have you connected or someone connected to an o2 hotspot at all?

So without seeing the full message headers, it is impossible to see if the email is spam.

@Elanorf

It's a genuine O2 domain used for the hotspots provided by o2 to shops and venues.

The domain uses O2 DNS servers and is owned by o2 Worldwide and is managed by o2's IP partner Stobbs.

Stobbs ranked Tier 1 in latest Legal 500 (iamstobbs.com)

According to THIS POST of yours, it only refers to .co.uk. (Hence my confusion) 😉

Really? If someone mistakenly added .co.uk instead of .com to my email address. I wouldn't get the email. I fail to  see how it's 'the same thing'?

All seems pretty stupid really. The op received an EMAIL asking them to verify their EMAIL address. What for?

On our o2 wifi in our stores, it sends from .co.uk but I have also seen it come from .com it all depends on the vendor, and if they have a preference 😀

I agree it should be standardised and one of my pet hates is service admins who do this crap slight_smile
